Natural, Bleached, and Un-Bleached, Textured, Treated, Un-treated, and Coatings are available. Resins are added either to the fiber pulp slurry (wet-end additives) to improve wet and dry strength by preventing water from penetrating and breaking hydrogen bonds and to improve stiffness by increasing adhesion between fibers, or they are added to the surface of the formed paper sheet to improve water and scuff resistance. Some imitation parchment paper has the mottled parchment look printed onto the paper.

Parchment paper is a generic term that can refer to either genuine vegetable Parchment Paper or to imitation parchment paper, or Vellum. Each is made in distinctly different ways. Glassine is one type of imitation Parchment Paper. Onion Skin Paper is another type of imitation Parchment Paper. Vellum Paper often refers to a fine parchment, but more accurately refers to parchment made from calf skin. The words "vellum" and "veal" come from Latin vitulus, "calf", or its diminutive vitellus.
