Parchment Paper
| Once made from animal skins, Parchment Paper is now achieved by treating a high density plant-based paper from cellulose fibers with sulfuric acid. Parchment paper is characterized by a hard surface, high wet-strength, resistance to grease and dirt. Typical applications for Parchment Paper include menus, certificates, awards, wedding invitations, and other important documents, embossing, rubber stamp, and offset printing. Lamp shades are sometimes made from Parchment Paper. Parchment Paper duplicates the appearance of ancient, historical
documents to convey a theme of antiquity and importance. Ideal for calligraphy writing or to enhance the presentation of framed documents such as poetry or genealogy charts. Other applications include cooking and baking sheet pan liners (Baking Parchment Paper, Cooking Parchment Paper) as Parchment Paper will not burn like Wax Paper or Standard grease-proof paper. To avoid sticking to foods, silicone and other coatings can be applied to parchment. This Silicone Coated Parchment Paper has limitless applications. |
The modern manufacturing technique that mimics the original look of the ancient
animal-skin paper-making process has undergone tremendous evolution thus, may different colors and coatings are available. Natural, Bleached, and Un-Bleached, Textured, Treated, Un-treated, and Coatings are available. Resins are added either to the fiber pulp slurry (wet-end additives) to improve wet and dry strength by preventing water from penetrating and breaking hydrogen bonds and to improve stiffness by increasing adhesion between fibers, or they are added to the surface of the formed paper sheet to improve water and scuff resistance. Some imitation parchment paper has the mottled parchment look printed onto the paper.
Parchment paper is a generic term that can refer to either genuine vegetable Parchment
Paper or to imitation parchment paper, or Vellum. Each is made in distinctly different
ways. Glassine is one type of imitation Parchment Paper. Onion Skin Paper is another type of imitation Parchment Paper. Vellum Paper often refers to a fine parchment, but more accurately refers to parchment made from calf skin. The words "vellum" and "veal" come from Latin vitulus, "calf", or its diminutive vitellus.
